Message from Ed Pinero of the OFEE
TEXT HERE The Summit was very successful from the perspective of Office of the Federal Environmental Executive because of the excellent, open, and productive dialogue among the Federal participants. The primary goal of OFEE in supporting the summit was to encourage dialogue among agencies on the overall topic of sustainability. Our belief is that increased awareness and sharing of experiences will lead to enhanced stewardship and performance, but in a more efficient manner than simply reinventing the wheel. We look forward to inter-agency cooperation on the various action areas identified during the breakout sessions. We also look forward to the creation of a Federal Inter-agency Sustainability Council to address intra-federal issues, and act as liaison to the broader community that participated in the summit. - http://www.ofee.gov/

Message From Dr. Alan Hecht of the US EPA
TEXT HERE Sustainable development is being modestly advanced by the activities of many federal agencies. Despite the varying perceptions of the concept of sustainability, federal agency managers, using existing authorities and funds are finding ways to:

  • Support state and community-led efforts on sustainability
  • Advance research, and develop new tools and methodologies
  • Support educational activities, and
  • Better coordinate their activities across the federal family

The Federal Summit was an effective means for participants to define sustainability issues relevant to their agencies and to explore ways to better coordinate across agencies. From where we sit as career staffers at EPA, we see a number of exciting opportunities for interagency cooperation, and will explore them in the months ahead. The news of the Federal Summit, and a link to the Summit results, will be highlighted in the EPA website on sustainability - www.epa.gov/sustainabiliy.

Message from Steve Cochran of the International Centre for Leadership Results, Gettysburg College:
In the closing session of the Federal Sustainability Summit the gathering was described as "historic". It was one of those all-too-infrequent occassions when the Administration, the agencies - both civilian and defense - and the extended government support community came together; to think, to act, and to commit. The day's results, and the leadership choices and actions made there have set us on a path toward a more sustainable future. - http://www.leadershipresults.org/
